![]() ![]() ![]() It's a perfect summer read with it being light, sweet, sentimental and romantic. I would (and will) read anything written by Téa Cooper now because I've fallen in love with her writing and stories. She doesn't find anything spectacular about herself, especially with her overly curvy hips, track record with love and traumatizing past, but Xander Fitzgerald (the photographer and Jeanie's love interest) thinks she's the most gorgeous creature on earth.and he falls in love with her. ![]() ![]() But Jeanie catches the eye of a handsome, charming and famous photographer and he proposes that she enter her seductive, fingernail-biting, café picture in a magazine cover girl contest.and he falls in love with her. So when a hoard of professional photographers and camera crews comes to her grandmother's café to do a promotional shoot, it's no exception. Jeanie Baker (the main character of Passionfruit and Poetry) was incredibly strong, relatable and lovable. Passionfruit and Poetry by Téa Cooper is the very definition of a "feel good book." It is short and sweet, but don't let that fool you, it's also packed full of love, lust and betrayal. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Reading poetry brings us closer to understanding life’s intensities. But poetry surrounds us it catches up with us, whether we like it or not. Some actively avoid it, like a confrontation not ready to be had. ![]() We don’t talk about poetry a lot these days. For me, The Jaguar reflects the heart-load we carry when it comes to caring for, and worrying about, those we love and those who need to be loved. Jeanette Winterson says “for the poet, there are words and there are words only”. Her work on and off the page is heartfelt. Along with her incredible poetry, Holland-Batt is one of the staunchest advocates for improved aged-care in Australia. I return to The Jaguar regularly, carried away by Holland-Batt’s words, which draw a line between human suffering and what it means to be human in this world. It speaks in a gentle but electric tones to all those whose parents are unwell, or who might be wading through an undertow of grief that threatens to pull them under. The Jaguar feels like a painting in words. ![]() ![]() If you don’t know the Brambly Hedge books, close this email right now and get thee to an open browser window to order them, if not in full then at least the seasonal ones (boxed together they’re called A Year in Brambly Hedge ). ![]() ![]() If you only want to deal with one list, make it this one. I am of the belief that we must celebrate summer when we glimpse it even briefly, because we’re not quite sure if it’s actually going to arrive to begin with, nor how long it will stay. This is to say, if you’ve been immersed in summer for weeks (months? always? ) now, good for you. I live just outside of Madison, Wisconsin, so your seasonal overlap is going to vary quite a bit from mine unless you too thrive in a subarctic USDA Hardiness Zone 5a where it is, somewhat literally, winter at least seven months of the year. I know, I know, it’s only the third one of these I’ve written so a bit soon for a special edition, except: summer is here! ![]() ![]() ![]() There is a slight conflict between these characters however, they support and care for each and that adds a nice element to the book especially when Efren gets overwhelmed. ![]() There's David who is Efren's best friend and then Jennifer who isn't necessarily Efren's best friend at first, but they have similar experiences as both of their parents are undocumented immigrants. ![]() While this book heavily deals with Efren and his father's attempt to get Ama home, it does a great job building supportive side characters that serve as Efren's friends. With his father working overtime to acquire enough money to help get Ama back home, Efren quickly attempts to adjust to his new routine.
