With food and water running low, how is he going to keep Sam fed? He basks in the praise of the engineer and crew once they're safe again, but their cheers soon turn to curses when Nat realizes the nearest island on the charts is nothing but a sandbar. Obsessed with the steamship's engine, Nat’s new position as the engineer’s apprentice is a dream come true even when a fierce storm tests the limits of his new skills. When her Natural talents are revealed, all the ways she’s used her far-from-human abilities to keep the engine running may count for nothing. She dreads the moment the crew learns their miracle and curse have a human face, but it’s Nat’s reaction she fears the most. Luck alone has kept Sam undiscovered so far. She is cyborg and, like the original Cinderella, Cinder is treated like a servant and made to do everything, but she is an expert mechanic and helps the family out by making money fixing things at the local market. Cinder lives in New Beijing, the capital of the Eastern Commonwealth with her guardian (evil step-mother) and two sisters – one who is kind and one who is awful. This time, even I got sucked into the entire series, although I listened to the very well done audio-book versions. I had read Cinder and Scarlet before, but for whatever reason didn’t continue on. My 11 year old started reading Cinder because it is on this year’s middle grade battle of the books list, but she quickly decided that she had to read the entire series. Put it all together and you have a surprisingly satisfying series. Once you’ve got that part understood, add in characters loosely related to well known fairy tale characters. In the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, that is the world that we enter. Imagine a futuristic world where there is life on the moon and where cyborg and android life are reality. I have to choose: risk the company or say goodbye to the man I’m falling for. Until I learn that this cutie’s intent is to defraud the company I’ve spent years building. I’ll teach him a lesson that will hopefully wind us both up in bed… with nothing but the truth between us.īut it turns out his shameless lies are enchanting… unintentionally hilarious… and make it all too easy to forget the truth… So I do him one better and pretend to be Sterling Chase’s new assistant. Two can play at the lying game, though, and I’m not about to let some burrito-delivering, floppy-haired virgin from Indiana best me at a game I was born to play. Rowe Prince is a lying liar who windmills into my life in full color, claiming to be Sterling Chase, a quirky, eccentric billionaire… and founder of the company I created. Publisher: Independent (February 14, 2023) WOMAN OF THE DEAD by Berhnard Aichner is one edgy, wacky, evil, tense, wicked, suspenseful, and thoroughly creepy mystery crime psycho-thriller. Vivid, tense, and written with breakneck narration, this novel introduces Bernhard Aichner as a rising star in crime fiction.Ī special thank you to Scribner and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Woman of the Dead, the first book in a trilogy, is an unforgettable thriller about the lengths one passionate woman will go to for vengeance and the tug-of-war between good and evil that exists in all of us. She soon learns Mark’s death was no accident-it was murder-and Blum dives headfirst into the abyss to find out why and have her revenge. Time passes quietly until while packing up Mark’s office, Blum discovers a recorded conversation from a case he was investigating. As Blum’s grief over the death of her husband, Mark, overwhelms her, only her two little girls can drag her back to the land of the living. Then in one devastating moment, a hit-and-run changes everything. She is a successful undertaker, a doting mother, and the loving wife of a decorated police officer. The #1 international bestseller hailed as "one of the most arresting thrillers" (#1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner), Woman of the Dead is the darkly riveting tale of Brünhilde Blum, a successful undertaker whose happiness is struck by tragedy that sets her on the path for revenge.įor the past eight years, Blum has had a good life-a life that masks the terrible secrets of her past. Next: Dive Deep and Analyze!įor the next fifteen minutes, students worked in homogenous small groups to break down the poem on a larger piece of paper. A few students got the “gist” of the poem and its theme with one read-through. I intentionally did not ask students to share their predicted themes because I wanted them to make this first attempt at theme on their own and then explore the poem without having a preconceived idea in their heads. Then, partners spent about four minutes summarizing the poem’s two stanzas and taking a stab at the poem’s theme. I sequenced major events on the board, which set the context for the poem and exploration of its theme. First Things First: Plot, Summary of Poem, Attempt at ThemeĪs a whole class, we recapped the major events from chapter five ( Where are Ponyboy and Johnny now? What has happened in the recent past?). First, let me run through what students did in class. Ultimately, students showed their level of mastery on a creative writing homework assignment (I’ve included a range of student samples below). My goal was for students to connect the poem’s theme to the novel’s recent events, which touches on the Common Core standard:Ĭ.7.2: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text provide an objective summary of the text. I asked my seventh grade students to analyze the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost, which appears in chapter five of the novel, The Outsiders. Recently, I revamped a poetry analysis lesson using feedback from the other Transition Fellows. In 1976 Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to Alex Comfort's best-selling 1972 illustrated sex manual "The Joy of Sex," allegedly just to secure the rights to the title, and in the late 1970s numerous writers, directors, and producers were reported as attached to the project, including Charles Grodin, Dudley Moore, and players from the Monty Python troupe. While Pip is used to trolls, any person with a public presence on the net is, she begins to take special notice when one particular troll asks her the same question over and over: who will look for you when you’re the one who disappears? She’s struggling for real.Īdding to her stress, because like all she’s been through isn’t enough, someone is harassing her. Her emotional state of mind is fairly dark. Particularly after solving her last case, she’s left with PTSD surrounding those events. Pip has faced very real dangers and she hasn’t come out unscathed. I’m hoping she pulls a Maureen Johnson, a la The Box in the Woods.īy this point in the series, y’all know, Pip has been through it. There’s so much more story that could be told. Personally, I feel like Jackson may not be done with Pip. As Good As Dead is the third, and they claim, the final book in Holly Jackson’s popular A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series. Although Punching the Air is not based on Salaam's experience of racial profiling, “Amal’s character is inspired by him as an artist and as an incarcerated teen who had the support of his family, read lots of books, and made art to keep his mind free.” Zoboi and Salaam met at Hunter College in 1999, two years before Salaam was exonerated for allegedly assaulting and raping a woman in Manhattan's Central Park.
